Falling temps and strawberry cigarettes

It’s just not getting any warmer……. There’s an expression, ‘when hell freezes over’…well, I think it has and I think I’m in it. I decided not to shovel up the snow drift in my room and just see how many days it takes to melt. It’s day four, and three quarters of it is still there.

When I went to bed last night it was so cold in my room that my face was hurting…..I ended up sleeping with my face under the covers. Oh where have those hot flushes gone that used to warm me on cold winters nights in Scotland. !!

I awoke this morning and discovered that the water in the toilet bowl was frozen. I also discovered that I had forgotten to turn off the air con in the living room and no, the room was not very warm. You’de think that it being on all night might have warmed at least a bit of the house, but it was so, so cold last night that it had about as much effect as weeing in the ocean…

The air is so cold, inside and outside of the house, that it’s almost impossible to warm things up. Thank god Tony put the fan on the kamina…that has made such a huge difference here.

It’s just so very cold at the moment and there’s another week of it forecast. What’s happened to those fabulous sunny days that greeted me here in Bulgaria just a few months ago? Where’s spring ?

Quite excited about tomorrow and next Tuesday…both days are above zero. A veritable heatwave. 🙂

And in amongst all of this, we had some quite warm sunshine on Tuesday…just enough to trick a few flies into hatching out. Christ, I bet they got a huge shock when the temperature that night plummeted to way below zero. 🙂

As I said to a friend today, I’ve gotta laugh about it…or I think I’d be temped to open my veins in a warm bath..Ooops, I forgot…I couldn’t do that…the bloody hot water’s been off all day !! Why was the hot water off and the cold still running ? Search me, but I did fling myself under the shower as soon as it came on again…just in case I can’t get one in the morning….

I did manage to get out of the house today, but not in my car. It’s still not starting.

Bill & Leslie came and rescued me and took me to town for supplies. Along with groceries, I needed to get some cigarettes. Now, there’s not a packet of menthol cigarettes in Yambol, and I know this because I tried everywhere to buy them.. all the supermarkets, all the wee corner shops that I came across while walking around. Not a single menthol cigarette to be had, so I let one shopkeeper talk me into buying the same brand I smoke, but in a pink packet. And guess what they taste like ? Strawberries !!! You can buy strawberry flavoured cigarettes in Bulgaria…Fantastic !! If you happen to like strawberries of course. Have they stopped making menthol cigarettes ? Has the towns stocks just run out ? Who knows, but just now I’m sitting here writing this, smoking a strawberry flavoured fag. 🙂

Tomorrow Bill & Leslie are returning to take me out again, this time to the big toon, Sliven. Who knows how long this weather is going to go on for, who knows how long it will be before my car starts, so I’m off to the big Billa supermarket in Sliven to really stock up the house. I’m not going to get caught again.

And still the tap is running in an effort to stop the pipes from freezing again…..

I’ve got my electric blanket on AND I’ve left the air con on in my room, so at least I’ve got a very toasty corner to recline in tonight…and that where I’m heading soon.
