The Internet reaches Miladinovtsi

October 26, 2005 by Jillian (Sue's sister)

What can I say…the death threat worked and Milcho was here at 9am..which is really something. The tradies here rarely turn up before ten! He’s hard at work in my hallway as I type and it’s starting to look damned good. It has to be said, these guys might frustrate the fuck out of you sometimes when they don’t turn up or disappear halfway through a job, but when they do complete, the work is fabulous…they do a great job.

Even better than a tiler, I’ve got the Internet…Hooray !!!!! And not just that either….I now have a quiet phone line……no humming, no buzzing, just a fabulous healthy silence….ah, bliss.

Two lovely blokes from BTK fronted here earlier today and because of the language barrier, I have no idea how they fixed it, but fix it they have…and were there any charges for all the hours they’ve put in trying to sort it? No, just big smiles and cheers from both of them when my computer actually logged on…..I think they were pretty happy themselves when they realised that whatever they had done had worked. They did warn me to remember to log off when I finish or else I would get a huge bill….I managed to ascertain that the Internet costs 1 lev an hour here, so I’ll have to spend an awful lot of hours on here to run a that huge bill methinks.

So, for the moment, I’m online and I can hardly believe it. I really thought that this was one problem no one was going to be able to resolve.

Rather strangley though, when I do log on, it sounds like it’s coming from the bottom of a very, very deep well….lots of echo and strange noises…Hmmm, lets hope that’s not a bad sign.

AND..it just gets better….the plumber actually turned up this morning as well..this place has been like Waverly Station on a Monday morning today. He’s isolated all the area downstairs where I want to demolish, so once my paying guest has gone and my sister has been and gone, I can dig out the sledge hammer and get stuck in……or should I leave it until after Christmas ? Which I was reminded yesterday, is only 8 weeks away….Eeeek !!! I don’t think I’m ready for that…..at all.

But am I happy today ?? Bloody oath I am :o)

Tomorrow, Ivan the kamina (fireplace) man is due……will he come ? That’s the 64 thousand dollar question… He’d better come….I’ve cleared the space where the fire is to go…but I’m not holding my breath. I’ll believe it when he walks through the door.

I’ve spent this arvo knocking up and freezing batches of pumpkin soup and cauliflower soup in readiness for my paying guest. I’m starting to have a few doubts here. I’ve been slapping out tucker for people all my life, but no one’s ever had to pay me for the meals before…and should I be offering dessert with the evening meal? I reckon I’m one of the worst dessert makers in the world…I made another Lemon Meringue Pie and it was a bit of a disaster, more like a lemon Mr Blobby…starting to have a wee crisis of confidence. Perhaps I can feed her on relish for five days….that’s turned out great :o)

It’s now 6.45, the tiler is still working (legend !!) and I’ve just watched a truly beautiful evening settle upon Miladinovtsi. The homing sheep are all back where they belong, the turkeys, chickens and geese are bedded down, the donkeys returned to their homes and the large black cow that seems to take herself out alone every morning and home again every evening, is just mosey-ing up the road all fat bottomed…… and as the backdrop to all this, a stunning dark blue evening sky streaked with flashes of red and pink.

Life is good
