More phone frustration

October 18, 2005 by Jillian (Sue's sister)

More frustration with the phone…….while I was staying in Yambol, my sister sent me a message that she was trying to ring my home phone and just kept getting an engaged signal. When I arrived back out here, I tried to make a call myself and though I was getting a dial tone, it would not let me dial out. So, no incomings, no outgoings.

I started to have concerns as to whether it had been cut off or blocked for some reason. Now, I’ve been going to the poshta at regular intervals to check if I had any outstandings phone bills, but was assured that I did not. I returned there yesterday just to check again…I got Albena on the phone to talk to the post office woman and was assured, again, that there was no ‘smetka’ and the phone had not been cut off.

When I returned from town at about 7.30 last night, the poshta lady turned up on my doorstep with a parcel from my sister (thanks Jill) and much Bulgarian about ‘telephone’& ‘Yambol’, all the time making scissors actions in the direction of the phone lines…..oh, yes, my interpretation of that was that, in fact, the phone HAS been cut off…… Somehow, somewhere, something has gone guts up….ARRRGH!!!!

Because I have to wait for Doncho today, Martin has kindly headed into Yambol, with a wad of cash and a translator, to try and sort it out for me………

Will the day ever come when I can sort these things out nice and simply…….??? The simple things that we all take for granted, just aren’t that simple here.

Later that same day…..Martin has returned and yes, the phone had been ‘disabled’ because I haven’t paid a bill for three months…it was only 80 levs, so I can’t really complain, but the translator omitted to find out why my bills have not been sent to Miladinotzi as arranged, so I could end up in the same position in a couple of months if I don’t get it sorted out….Jesus wept !!!

Still, the lovely Doncho has been and the exhaust fan looks great…OK, it ain’t working because he forgot to bring the flexible pipe need to connect it up to the ventialtion chamber in the wall, and I still need an electrician to come out and wire it up….but it’s looks great 😮 )

And I got to drag him from pillar to post measuring, measuring…..so hopefully, in the fullness of time, I’ll get some solid items, instead of just lots of measurments on a piece of paper.

Just now I’m waiting for Albena to arrive with yet another builder to look at the roof….this is really going beyond a joke….and the chances of me getting this place water tight before winter are now looking even less likely. There’s a saying in Australia….when you don’t have a chance they say ‘you’ve got Buckleys.’ When you’ve got even less chance, a snowflakes chance in hell, they say ‘you’ve got two chances: Buckleys and F*** all’…. right now, I think I fall into that latter category in regards to my roof repairs and rendering….. starting to feel quite despondent about it…..sigh………
